Uwe was born on May 2nd 1967 in Neuss. His interest in martial arts and eastern philosophy could be easily seen. He began at the age of 14 years with boxing and switched at 16 years to Tae Kwon Do. He remained loyal to this martial art for eight years and reached the first Dan. Due to a knee injury, he couldn’t continue with that sport and so it happened that Uwe – inspired by an advertisement - started Wing Chun.
As much as this martial art inspired him and even resulted into leading his own school, he felt more often that it contained some incompleteness’s. In a real fight this kind of Kung Fu was difficult to apply. In various other Wing Chun styles he also didn’t found the hoped-for satisfaction. In 2005 and 2006 he participated in seminars with Gary Lam. This type of Ving Tsun impressed him very much. However, because Gary lives in the U.S., it was impossible to train with him regularly.
Early 2008, Uwe met by luck Gert-Jan Ketelaar. Uwe immediately recognized the qualities of Gert-Jan and saw that he is a very good teacher. Also he felt his Ving Tsun was even more direct and clear in structure, compared to what Uwe knew from Gary Lam. Gert-Jan had answers to all unanswered questions that Uwe had on his mind for years. Finally, he had found in the Wong Shun Leung Ving Tsun the system to which he had been always looking for. A system with a clear line and no secrets.
