Roderick Smith

Trainer, San Diego, USA

Roderick Smith

Roderick was born on June 15th, 1961 in Indianapolis, USA, the place where he also started his training in the martial arts, Karate. In 1990 he moved to the Netherlands and came, almost accidentally, in 1993 to the school of Gert-Jan Ketelaar, when he was browsing through the Yellow Pages looking for a martial arts school. Roderick wanted to give his training a good start and right away asked Gert-Jan for private lessons. However, his request was granted much later, because at first Gert-Jan wanted to get to know Roderick, and he wanted to watch him train. In the following years, until his return to the USA in 2006, Roderick trained several times a week in the Hilversum school. The training sessions, which he has skipped in all those years, can be counted on the fingers of one hand. This showed his great persistence. His enthusiasm for Ving Tsun has also been increased by his meetings with Wong Shun Leung at seminars in the nineties. Also the seminars with Philipp Bayer have changed his view on Ving Tsun and his way of training. In 2004 he founded the school in Almere, which has later been taken over by the current trainers. He is an all-round practitioner. He always tries to motivate and inspire people. His personality is also one of an entertainer, he is humorous, but also direct and driven. His statement “Can you handle the truth” applies to practising Ving Tsun as well as to his style of teaching. He trains with great dedication, regardless of the number of students, their level, or which part is being trained, as long as students train.
